About Me

My journey through life has been as unique as anyone else's.

Life has shown me that you have to be yourself in everything that you do.

In doing so, you are the best version of you that you can be.

I started learning music around the age of 6.  This was the age of the Children's Choir at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church.  Along with that, I became old enough to start taking piano lessons from my aunt Rebecca.  In school, everyone got assigned an instrument, and I was assigned a violin.  So I learned piano, choir and violin for my early years.  As I grew, I focused on school and became very interested in computers.  I put music to the side as a hobby up through high school, and then in college, I found myself joining the local college radio station.  DJ Tankdilla was born at WRVU Vanderbilt college radio.  I had a weekly show that started at 30 minutes, which is just long enough to play 5 songs per week, with barely time to talk in between!  Eventually I got an hour long show.  The show was dedicated to underground hip hop, which was very underground in Nashville.

In addition to singing in the choir growing up in church, my father had a very diverse selection of music, and so I learned a lot just listening and being around him.  Along with Motown, R&B, and soul music, he was a fan of rock music and rock bands of the 70s and 80s.

At the height of the popularity of compact discs (CDs), I started a collection that began with popular rap and hip hop artists at the time which became among my all time favorites. I worked a job after school and slowly built my collection.

Movie soundtracks of the 90s were a good way to get a variety of artists singing mostly good songs.  I started collecting rock music that my father listened to, in addition to alternative music, which was popularized by bands like Nirvana and Radiohead.

After college, I had a 20 year career as a software engineer before realizing my true passion lie in music.  Throughout that time I continued in the church choir and gaining a love of gospel music.  I think of this now as my time in the wilderness.  I was primarily focused on success as a software engineer, but in the end even great success was unfulfilling.  Music had been my companion throughout my life and I realized it's what got me through the good times and the hard times.  God especially has kept me through it all!

I've turned what was once a hobby into a passion, and learned to create music that fuses my life experience into what you hear.  My music is influenced by so many great artists including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Outkast, Pharrell, Timbaland, H.E.R. , Jimmy Hendrix, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Kirk Franklin, Walter Hawkins, Thomas Whitfield, Milton Brunson, Jonathan McReynolds, Metro Boomin, DJ Khalid, DJ Premiere, Richard Smallwood, Mattie Robertson, Donald Alford, Donald Alford Jr, Gloria Alford, Rebecca Richmond, just to name a few.

My music and my songs are about the journey that life takes us through.  I hope that you are uplifted from my music and that you know that you can make it through whatever happens in life.

This is Tankdilla. Be blessed!
